Wisdom Teeth Removal to avoid increased risk of developing infections, cysts, jaw and nerve damage, and even (nonmalignant) tumors

Wisdom teeth typically begin to develop and erupt during the late teens or early twenties (although timing can vary from person to person). When there isn’t enough room for them to emerge properly, they may become impacted or contribute to problems such as infection, cyst formation, damage to neighboring teeth, or other complications.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, wisdom tooth removal may be recommended for patients aged 14 and older when the teeth are likely to create future oral health concerns. In many cases, removing wisdom teeth at a younger age can make treatment more predictable because the roots may not yet be fully developed and the surrounding bone may be less dense.

As patients get older, wisdom tooth roots can become more fully formed and may lie closer to nearby nerves and other structures, which can make removal more complex. Evaluating wisdom teeth early allows our team to monitor their development and recommend the appropriate timing for treatment based on each patient's individual needs.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and ready to provide you with personalized care using the most cutting-edge dental technology available. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with dental implant and oral surgery services, including oral surgery, Same Day Teeth®, and periodontal services. MORE INFORMATION ON OUR LOCATIONS FOR WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL:

Steps Involved in Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most commonly performed tooth extraction procedures. The process will begin with a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, and allow us to determine the positioning of your wisdom teeth. Prior to performing the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered along with IV sedation to ensure your comfort. Once you are sufficiently numbed, an incision is made in your gum line to provide us access to the wisdom tooth. Next, we will remove any bone covering the tooth and loosen connective tissue if necessary. Following this, we will use specialized surgical instruments to loosen the tooth and, if necessary, section it to be removed in pieces. Once the tooth has been removed, the area is stitched shut, and the procedure will be complete.

Aftercare Following Wisdom Tooth Removal

Following wisdom teeth removal, post-procedural pain, swelling, and complications can be minimized or avoided if the following instructions are closely followed.

  • Leave the gauze pad over the surgical area for at least half an hour, after which you can remove and discard the gauze pad. If bleeding continues, another gauze pad can be placed. If bleeding does not stop, contact our office for additional instructions.
  • Avoid disturbing the surgical area
  • Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take OTC or prescription medication as directed.
  • Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
  • You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this should go away as the healing process progresses.
  • Follow a soft food diet for approximately 3-5 days, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing progresses.
  • Avoid tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
  • If possible, limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.

Provided you closely follow these aftercare instructions, you should enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications. Neglecting to follow these instructions increases your risk of developing a dry socket, which can be extremely painful. In addition to following these aftercare instructions, we strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By closely following aftercare instructions, scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you should enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications and continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.

Cost of Wisdom Teeth Removal

The cost of wisdom teeth removal will depend on a variety of factors, including how many teeth are removed, what type of dental sedation is used, whether additional procedures are performed, and (if applicable) your dental insurance plan coverage. At Coastal Jaw Surgery, we are committed to providing you with high-quality oral care in a manner that is simple and efficient. To help meet your unique budget and needs, we offer the following financing options:

  • Carecredit® Healthcare Financing (interest-free financing for dental care)

We also accept traditional insurance, and as a courtesy to you, we are happy to file and track your insurance claim and assist with insurance family plans. To help facilitate this process, please have your insurance information prepared at your appointment, including your insurance and identification card. To help you maximize your benefits, we are also happy to provide a written diagnostic report and X-rays to your insurance company if necessary.

Please note: Dental insurance only covers part of your total expenses, and remaining out-of-pocket expenses must be paid following service. We accept cash, debit cards, and most major credit cards (MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express).
