Symptoms of Oral Pathology
The inside of a healthy and normal mouth is lined with a special type of smooth, coral pink skin called mucosa. Any change in the appearance of your mucosa can be a warning sign of a pathological process, the most serious affliction being oral cancer. The things to evaluate when performing your self-examinations are:
- Red or white patches of any oral tissues.
- A sore that refuses to heal and bleeds easily.
- An abnormal lump or the thickening of the tissues in your mouth.
- A chronic sore throat or hoarseness.
- Difficulty in either chewing or swallowing.
- A mass or lump in your neck.
These or other changes in the color or texture of your lips, cheeks, gum tissues, palate, tongue, face, and neck, should be monitored closely. Pain or discomfort is not always the first sign of pathology in your mouth. Hard tissue lesions are often unrecognized until an x-ray reveals their existence. If you are experiencing oral or facial pain without any obvious reason, schedule an appointment with Coastal Jaw Surgery at your earliest convenience.
Are You at Risk for Oral Pathology
Certain lifestyles and habits can increase the likelihood of oral pathology. If you use tobacco products, drink alcohol in excess, and are exposed to the sun often you have an increased risk for pathology. There are many instances with oral pathology that can claim none of these lifestyle risks. That is why screening is so important.
Oral Pathology Screenings
Coastal Jaw Surgery recommends performing monthly self-examinations to identify any changes in the color and appearance of your mouth, and any of the symptoms listed above. Be apprised that your mouth serves as one of the single most important warning systems in your body, so you should be conscious of that and look for signs of change. The conscientious staff at Coastal Jaw Surgery urges you never to ignore a suspicious sore or lump in your mouth, as it may be a sign of a change in your oral pathology.
Professional oral cancer screenings should be performed once a year. You can count on us to be vigilant in the search for signs of oral pathology. We will perform a thorough exam of your mouth, head and neck at every routine dental visit and will always order additional tests and screenings if deemed necessary. We will also consider any risk factors in your lifestyle and make suggestions on how best to keep yourself healthy.
