DENTAL BONE GRAFT TO RESTORE PROPER FUNCTIONING & DETERIORATION

Once a tooth has been lost or extracted, the jawbone will lose 30-60% of its volume within the first six months. To help prevent his from happening, tooth socket preservation, dental bone grafts, and/or dental implants may also be performed as part of the treatment process. Bone loss can result in numerous oral health issues and physical changes to the structure of your face to occur, which can result in gum disease, tooth decay increased tooth sensitivity, and significant changes to the overall functionality of your teeth and aesthetic appearance of your face.

bone grafting procedure is an effective method of restoring jawbone tissue to restore proper functioning, and is commonly performed as part of the dental implant process. If jawbone deterioration has occurred to the point that a dental implant cannot be adequately supported, a small incision is made to gain access to the site where the bone graft is then placed. Once the bone graft is in proper position, a membrane is placed over the graft (GTR) to facilitate the bone repair process, and the area is stitched shut. Once the graft has facilitated regeneration of bone tissue and fully integrated, there will be enough jawbone material to support a dental implant.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and ready to provide you with personalized care using the most cutting-edge dental technology for bone and soft tissue regeneration available. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with dental implant and oral surgery services, including oral surgery, Same Day Teeth®, and periodontal services. TYPES OF BONE GRAFTS

The following types of bone grafts may be used as part of your dental bone graft procedure:

  • Autogenous: Graft material taken from another part of your own body, such as you hip, lower leg bone, jaw, or chin. Advantages include enhanced bone growth due to the graft containing living cellular elements; disadvantages include the need for an additional procedure to harvest the material and additional recovery time.
  • Allogenic: Graft material taken from a cadaver that is then medically processed prior to placement. Advantages include the graft has well documented success and is less invasive then using your own bone; disadvantages include a minimal risk for disease transmission and the graft does not stimulate your body to produce new bone, but instead acts as a scaffold or framework over which surrounding bone can form.
  • Xenogeneic: Graft material taken from another species, most typically a cow. Advantages include the graft has well documented success and is readily available; disadvantages include a minimal risk for disease transmission and the graft does not stimulate your body to produce new bone, but instead acts as a scaffold or framework over which surrounding bone can form, resulting in less predictable outcomes.

AFTERCARE FOLLOWING DENTAL BONE GRAFTING

Following a dental bone graft, post-procedural pain, swelling, and complications can be minimized or avoided if the following instructions are closely followed.

  • Avoid disturbing the surgical area
  • Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take OTC or prescription medication as directed.
  • Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
  • You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this should go away as the healing process progresses.
  • Follow a soft food diet for the first 3-5 days, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing progresses.
  • Avoid tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
  • If possible, limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.

In addition to following these aftercare instructions, we strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By closely following aftercare instructions, scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you should enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications, and be ready for dental implant placement in four to six months.

COST OF DENTAL BONE GRAFT

The cost of a dental bone graft will depend on a variety of factors, including what type of graft is used, whether additional procedures are performed as part of your treatment plan, what type of dental sedation is used, and (if applicable) your dental insurance plan coverage. At Coastal Jaw Surgery, we are committed to providing you with high-quality oral care in a manner that is simple and efficient. To help meet your unique budget and needs, we offer the following financing options:

We also accept traditional insurance, and as courtesy to you, are happy to file and track your insurance claim and assist with insurance family plans. To help facilitate this process, please have your insurance information prepared at your appointment, including your insurance and identification card. To help you maximize your benefits, we are also happy to provide a written diagnostic report and X-rays to your insurance company if necessary.

Please note: Dental insurance only covers part of your total expenses and remaining out-of-pocket expenses must be paid following service. We accept cash, debit cards, and most major credit cards (MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express).
