Facial trauma is bone or soft tissue damage to your face caused by a motor vehicle accident, an assault, including a gunshot, a sports injury, an unfortunate fall, a chemical exposure, thermal burns, or an animal bite.

Facial trauma is bone or soft tissue damage to your face caused by a motor vehicle accident, an assault, including a gunshot, a sports injury, an unfortunate fall, a chemical exposure, thermal burns, or an animal bite. Since your face is an intricate area of your body containing many bones, nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and sensory organs, if left untreated, facial trauma can cause a permanent loss of function, such as seeing, chewing, speaking, swallowing, and disfigurement. Our Surgeons at Coastal Jaw Surgery are actively involved in facial trauma surgery and collaborate with emergency room doctors and other necessary practitioners to lessen the risk of any permanent complications.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and ready to provide you with personalized care using the most cutting-edge technology available. Facial Soft Tissue Injuries

Examples of soft tissue injuries to your face can include:

  • Cuts and scrapes to your face
  • Torn skin or facial laceration, that raises the risk of bleeding, infection, and scarring.
  • Facial burns, either thermal or chemical.
  • Eye injuries.
  • Nerve damage can affect the sensation of your ability to smile, blink, move your eyes to focus, or to
    swallow, bite, and chew.
  • A laceration of your tongue, which can impair your ability to eat, swallow or speak.
  • Damage to your salivary glands. Over 100 of these glands are found in your face and keep your mouth
    moist for eating and speaking.

The first stage of treatment might take place in an emergency room. There you will get a full trauma evaluation
and the emergency management of any life-threatening conditions. Coastal Jaw Surgery can follow up with this
evaluation to perform corrective trauma surgery to restore your oral and facial health.

Bleeding and swelling are addressed to manage the effects of facial trauma on your airway, brain, and vision. Facial
injuries can be associated with:

  • Airway damage- A broken nose or other fractures and swelling can injure your nasal passageways and make it difficult for you to breathe.
  • Neurological problems- Facial injuries can be associated with head trauma that can have an impact on your skull and brain.
  • Eye injuries- The eye and its surrounding nerves and bones can be damaged.
  • Internal bleeding- This can cause increasing pressure in the skull, putting your eyes, brain, nerves, or other sensitive structures at risk for further injury.

Facial Fractures

Facial fractures can affect any part of your face and impair healthy function or distort your appearance. Severe fractures of the facial bones can cause a multitude of problems.

  • A broken jaw can affect your ability to eat, chew, speak and swallow.
  • Teeth can be cracked or broken necessitating restorative dental treatment.
  • Broken bones in your midface.
  • A broken eye socket or nose.

Diagnosing Your Facial Trauma

During an evaluation with Coastal Jaw Surgery your team will:

  • Determine if you have any life-threatening injuries, if so, they will be addressed immediately.
  • Check your nasal passages and airways for any obstruction.
  • Look at your eyes to confirm they are functioning properly.
  • Check for damage to your central nervous system, your brain and spinal cord.
  • Ask you to describe your symptoms.
  • Ask you for details about your facial injury and how it occurred.
  • Check your face for asymmetry or damage.
  • Gently palpate or press on the bones of your face to determine the extent of damage.

Facial Trauma Surgery

Severe facial trauma might require reconstructive surgery. There are two main goals of facial reconstructive surgery at Coastal Jaw Surgery:

  • To restore all proper functions, such as vision, chewing, swallowing, or breathing through your nose.
  • To enhance and optimize your natural healthy appearance.

Cost of Facial Trauma Surgery

The cost of your facial trauma surgery treatment will depend on a variety of factors, ranging from diagnostic digital exams to the extent of the surgery, and (if applicable) your dental insurance plan coverage. At Coastal Jaw Surgery, we are committed to providing you with high-quality oral care in a manner that is both simple and efficient. To help meet your unique budget and needs, we offer the following financing options:

  • Carecredit® Healthcare Financing (interest free financing for dental care)
  • GreenSky® Patient Financing
  • Lending Club Patient Financing

We also accept traditional insurance, and as an additional courtesy, are happy to file and track your insurance claim and assist with insurance family plans. To help facilitate this process, please have your insurance information prepared at your appointment, including your insurance and identification card. To help you maximize your benefits, we are also happy to provide a written diagnostic report and X-rays to your insurance company if necessary.

Please note: Dental insurance only covers part of your total expenses; any remaining out-of-pocket expenses must be paid following service. We accept cash, debit cards, and most major credit cards (MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express).
