Gum recession Treatment for correcting, halting, reversing, and preventing gum disease.

Gum recession is a condition that can develop for a variety of reasons, such as genetic predisposition, aggressive brushing, smoking, untreated bruxism, or, most commonly, gum disease. Nearly 65 million Americans currently suffer from gum disease, an increasingly common inflammatory disease that is the leading cause of tooth loss. Gum disease develops when bacterial plaque forms on your teeth and begins to attack your teeth and gums, creating recessed gums and deepened pockets in the space between your gums, which allows for more bacteria to accumulate, additional damage to occur, and gums to being to recede. Our clinic offers several treatment options for correcting gum recession and halting, reversing, and preventing gum disease.

To develop an appropriate treatment plan for your gum recession, it will be necessary to first identify the underlying cause. Some patients develop gum recession due to aggressive brushing techniques. If this is the case, switching to a softer bristle toothbrush and modifying your brushing technique may be sufficient to prevent additional damage from developing. In other cases, gum recession may occur due to lifestyle habits, such as smoking, an unhealthy diet, or inconsistent oral health care. If you are prepared to make changes to your lifestyle habits, you may be able to halt the progression of gum recession.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by Board-Certified Periodontists who specialize in identifying and treating gum disease and other issues related to the periodontium. We also provide comprehensive treatment options to ensure similar issues do not develop in the future. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with dental implant and oral surgery services, including oral surgery, Same Day Teeth®, and periodontal services. To schedule an appointment to treat gum recession, contact us today at (800) NEW-LOOK.

How to Reduce Your Risk of Gum Recession

Although some patients are more predisposed to developing gum disease than others, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing gum disease, one of the most important being practicing good oral hygiene habits at home. It may also be necessary to make lifestyle changes, such as limiting certain foods or beverages, avoiding tobacco use, or implementing a mouth rinse as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. We also strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing gum disease and continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.

Treatment Options for Gum Recession

One of the most common methods for correcting receding gums is a gum graft. Prior to performing a gum graft, we will conduct a thorough examination of your oral health to determine any underlying conditions that need to be addressed, and if necessary, take a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, which allows us to make informed treatment decisions.

During the gum graft process, we will do everything we can to ensure that you experience minimal discomfort, which is why we offer varying levels of sedation, including oral sedatives, nitrous oxide, and intravenous (IV) sedation. Once you are sedated, the procedure will begin.

There are several different types of gum grafts that can be performed, which will determine what steps are involved, but the procedure typically begins by making a small flap and taking a piece of epithelial tissue from the patient’s palate (connective tissue) then suturing the flap and placing the tissue over the area requiring treatment. Additionally, connective tissue grafts may be used to thicken tissues and provide root coverage for additional support and an improved aesthetic appearance.

Patients who require a substantial amount of tissue but thin gums may be good candidates for a free gingival graft, which takes tissue from the topmost layer of the flap. Patients who have sufficient healthy gum tissue may have a pedicle graft, which involves making an incision in the gums and stretching the tissue over the area being treated. Another method for correcting gum recession is tunneling, a minimally-invasive procedure that involves creating a small pouch beneath the gums and covering root surfaces and thickening the patient’s gums using donor tissue. Although donor tissue does reduce patient discomfort and can be an effective treatment option, use of autogenous tissues is recommended. Regardless of what type of graft is performed, the procedure will conclude with placement of special proteins (GTR) that are designed to facilitate tissue growth and speed up the healing process.
