Gum Disease treatment for optimal oral health outcomes

Nearly 65 million Americans currently suffer from gum disease, an increasingly common inflammatory disease that is the leading cause of tooth loss. Gum disease develops when bacterial plaque forms on your teeth and begins to attack your teeth and gums, creating deepened pockets in the space between your gums, which allows for more bacteria to accumulate and additional damage to occur. Over time, this bacteria plaque will harden and turn into tartar. Once gum disease has progressed to this point, periodontal intervention will be necessary. If left untreated, gum disease can result in increasingly severe oral health issues, such as gum recession, loosened or missing teeth, and jawbone deterioration. Gum disease is also linked to other systemic health issues, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Our clinic offers several treatment options for halting, reversing, and preventing gum disease, including scaling and root planing, gum grafting, osseous surgery, and regular periodontal maintenance.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by Board-Certified Periodontists who specialize in identifying and treating gum disease and other issues related to the periodontium. We also provide comprehensive treatment options to ensure similar issues do not develop in the future. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with dental implant and oral surgery services, including oral surgery, Same Day Teeth®, and periodontal services. Treatment Options for Gum Disease

If you are in the early stages, it may be possible to halt and reverse gum disease by performing a scaling and root planning procedure, which involves removing the plaque or calculus from the root, then smoothing the surface of the root to inhibit the growth and accumulation of future bacteria. While this approach to correcting gum disease is often very effective, especially if conducted in the early stages of the disease, it will be necessary to schedule regular periodontal maintenance every three to six months, and possibly with greater frequency to ensure gum disease does not develop again.

More advanced cases of gum disease may require surgical intervention to restore the functionality and improve the cosmetic appearance of your teeth. When periodontal disease has become so advanced that traditional treatment methods are no longer sufficient and regular brushing and cleaning techniques are no longer able to remove the harmful bacteria, osseous surgery (also known as periodontal pocket reduction) may be necessary. Osseous surgery is a surgical procedure that involves eliminating bacteria, reducing pockets, and smoothing damaged bone to create a healthy environment where your gums can reattach to the bone.

In addition to osseous surgery, patients who have developed significant gum recession due to advanced periodontal disease may benefit from a gum graft. A gum graft corrects receded gums by taking a piece of tissue (typically from the roof of the mouth) or donor tissue and suturing it over the area of recession. Placing this new tissue helps stimulate new growth, reduces your risk of developing periodontal disease, and improves the aesthetic appearance of one’s smile. A gingivectomy may also be performed for patients who do not respond to traditional periodontal therapeutic treatment, such as scaling and root planning. During a gingivectomy, the gums are removed and reshaped in order to reduce the pocketing around your teeth, which can house harmful bacteria.

Cost of Treating Gum Disease

The cost of treating gum disease will depend on a variety of factors, including what procedures are performed as part of your treatment plan, what type of dental sedation is used, and (if applicable) your dental insurance plan coverage. At Coastal Jaw Surgery, we are committed to providing you with high-quality oral care in a manner that is simple and efficient. To help meet your unique budget and needs, we offer the following financing options:

  • Carecredit® Healthcare Financing (interest free financing for dental care)
  • GreenSky® Patient Financing
  • Lending Club Patient Financing

We also accept traditional insurance, and as a courtesy to you, are happy to file and track your insurance claim and assist with insurance family plans. To help facilitate this process, please have your insurance information prepared at your appointment, including your insurance and identification card. To help you maximize your benefits, we are also happy to provide a written diagnostic report and X-rays to your insurance company if necessary.

Please note: Dental insurance only covers part of your total expenses; any remaining out-of-pocket expenses must be paid following service. We accept cash, debit cards, and most major credit cards (MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express).

How to Reduce Your Risk of Gum Disease

Although some patients are more predisposed to developing gum disease than others, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing gum disease, one of the most important being practicing good oral hygiene habits at home. It may also be necessary to make lifestyle changes, such as limiting certain foods or beverages, avoiding tobacco use, or implementing a mouth rinse as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. We also strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing gum disease and continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.
