SINUS LIFT FOR ADVANCED PERIODONTAL & IMPLANTOLOGY PROCEDURES
A sinus lift is a surgical procedure where the sinus membrane is lifted and a bone graft is placed between your jaw and maxillary sinuses. There are several reasons why a sinus lift may be necessary, but the most common is because there is insufficient bone height in the upper jaw to support a dental implant. Once the graft has facilitated regeneration of bone tissue and fully integrated, there will be enough jawbone material to support a dental implant.

STEPS INVOLVED IN THE SINUS LIFT PROCESS
Prior to performing the sinus lift procedure, we will conduct a thorough examination of your oral health to determine any underlying conditions that need to be addressed, and take a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, which allows us to determine the measurements of exiting bone and the health of your sinus cavity.
During the sinus lift procedure, we will do everything we can to ensure that you experience minimal discomfort, which is why we offer varying levels of sedation, including oral sedatives, nitrous oxide, and intravenous (IV) sedation. Once you are sedated, the sinus lift procedure will begin. If you are a viable candidate, we will perform a crestal sinus lift, a protocol our team invented in 2014 that allows us to simultaneously perform the sinus lift and place the bone graft and implant all in one visit.
If you are not a viable candidate for the crestal sinus lift, the traditional sinus lift procedure will begin with a small incision being made in your gums, which will allow us to make a small opening in the bone to access the sinus membrane. When the sinus membrane is accessible, we will gently lift the membrane away from the jaw and place the bone graft in the opened space. When the appropriate amount of grafting material is in place, the area is stitched shut. Once the grafting process is complete, a follow-up appointment for dental implant placement can be scheduled.
AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING A SINUS LIFT
Following a sinus lift procedure, post-procedural pain, swelling, and complications can be minimized or avoided if the following instructions are closely followed.
- Do not blow your nose and avoid sneezing, as either action can move the bone graft out of place or loosen stiches.
- Avoid disturbing the surgical area.
- Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take OTC or prescription medication as directed.
- Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
- Follow a soft food diet for at least two weeks or longer if suggested in your aftercare instructions, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing process progresses.
- Avoid tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process
- Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
- If possible, limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.
- Antibiotics and an antimicrobial mouthwash may be used to reduce your risk of infection.
In addition to following these aftercare instructions, we strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By closely following aftercare instructions, scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you should enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications, and will be ready to have dental implants placed in approximately four to nine months.
