PERIODONTAL MAINTENANCE FOR ADVANCED GUM DISEASE
Nearly 65 million Americans currently suffer from gum disease, an inflammatory disease that is the leading cause of tooth loss. Gum disease develops when bacteria creates space between the teeth, gums, and bone, which results in pocketing. This in turn creates more room for bacteria to accumulate, multiply, and invade the surrounding bone and gums. Gum disease that is not treated will eventually result in increasingly severe issues, such as gum recession, loosened or missing teeth, and jawbone deterioration. Gum disease is also linked to other systemic health issues, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Periodontal maintenance is recommended for patients who have had or have periodontal disease. On average, it is recommended that patients schedule regular periodontal maintenance every three to six months, with more frequent visits being necessary for patients with advanced cases of periodontal disease or who are more likely to develop periodontal disease. During your periodontal maintenance appointment, we will perform a thorough examination of your gum pockets and provide a deep cleaning. Additional treatment will be provided if necessary.
At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by Board-Certified Periodontists who specialize in identifying and treating periodontal disease and issues related to the periodontium. We also provide comprehensive treatment options to ensure similar issues do not develop in the future. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with dental implant and oral surgery services, including oral surgery, Same Day Teeth®, and periodontal services. REDUCE YOUR RISK OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Although some patients are more predisposed to developing gum disease than others, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing gum disease, one of the most important being practicing good oral hygiene habits at home. It may also be necessary to make lifestyle changes, such as limiting certain foods or beverages, avoiding tobacco use, or implementing a mouth rinse as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. We also strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing gum disease and continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.
STEPS INVOLVED IN PERIODONTAL MAINTENANCE
Because we provide personalized treatment for all our clients, the steps involved in periodontal maintenance will be slightly different for every patient, and informed by a variety of factors, including the severity of your periodontal disease, the status of your current periodontal health, and whether there are any indications that periodontal disease is present or developing.
A typical periodontal maintenance appointment will begin with a discussion of any changes in your oral health and any concerns you may have. Next, we will conduct a thorough examination of your gums, teeth, cheeks. This evaluation will include testing the depth of your pockets and looking for any indications of periodontal disease. If necessary, we will take a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, which allows us to make informed treatment decisions.
Once the diagnostic process is complete, we will perform a deep cleaning to remove plaque and bacteria that has formed above and below the gum line, and smooth out any rough areas of roots. Once this process is complete, we will discuss any additional treatment plans (if necessary) and schedule your follow up appointment.
While sedation will not generally be necessary for regular periodontal maintenance examinations, please know that we will do everything we can to ensure that you experience minimal discomfort, which is why we offer varying levels of sedation, including oral sedatives, nitrous oxide, and intravenous (IV) sedation.
