PERIODONTAL MAINTENANCE FOR ADVANCED GUM DISEASE

Periodontal maintenance is recommended for patients who have been treated for periodontal disease or who continue to require ongoing periodontal care. Gum disease develops when plaque and bacteria accumulate around and below the gumline, leading to inflammation and the formation of periodontal pockets. As the disease progresses, these pockets can deepen and allow bacteria to damage the gums and bone that support the teeth.

Without proper treatment and maintenance, periodontal disease can contribute to gum recession, loose or missing teeth, and loss of supporting bone.

Periodontal maintenance appointments are typically scheduled every three to four months, although the exact interval will depend on the severity of the condition and each patient’s individual risk factors. During these visits, our team evaluates the gums and periodontal pockets, removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, and monitors for signs of disease progression. Additional periodontal treatment may be recommended when necessary.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, our Board-Certified Periodontists specialize in diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions affecting the gums and other supporting structures of the teeth. For more than three decades, we have provided patients throughout the Tampa Bay area with periodontal, dental implant, oral surgery, and Same Day Teeth® services.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Although some patients are more predisposed to developing gum disease than others, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing gum disease, one of the most important being practicing good oral hygiene habits at home. It may also be necessary to make lifestyle changes, such as limiting certain foods or beverages, avoiding tobacco use, or implementing a mouth rinse as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. We also strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By scheduling regular maintenance and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing gum disease and continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.

STEPS INVOLVED IN PERIODONTAL MAINTENANCE

Because we provide personalized treatment for all our clients, the steps involved in periodontal maintenance will be slightly different for every patient and informed by a variety of factors, including the severity of your periodontal disease, the status of your current periodontal health, and whether there are any indications that periodontal disease is present or developing.

A typical periodontal maintenance appointment will begin with a discussion of any changes in your oral health and any concerns you may have. Next, we will conduct a thorough examination of your gums, teeth, and cheeks. This evaluation will include testing the depth of your pockets and looking for any indications of periodontal disease. If necessary, we will take a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, which allows us to make informed treatment decisions.

Once the diagnostic process is complete, we will perform a deep cleaning to remove plaque and bacteria that have formed above and below the gum line, and smooth out any rough areas of roots. Once this process is complete, we will discuss any additional treatment plans (if necessary) and schedule your follow-up appointment.

While sedation will not generally be necessary for regular periodontal maintenance examinations, please know that we will do everything we can to ensure that you experience minimal discomfort, which is why we offer varying levels of sedation, including oral sedatives, nitrous oxide, and intravenous (IV) sedation.
