ZYGOMATIC DENTAL IMPLANTS ANCHORED IN THE UPPER JAWBONE
Patients who are missing all of the teeth in their upper jaw or whose teeth have broken down due to advanced periodontal disease may be good candidates for Zygomatic Dental Implants. Standard dental implant placement requires a bone height of at least 10 mm to ensure that the implant is successful. Patients whose jawbone has deteriorated beyond this point may no longer be able to sustain a traditional implant and may require a bone graft and/or sinus lift to create sufficient bone volume.
Unlike traditional dental implants, which are smaller and drilled directly into the jawbone, Zygomatic Dental Implants are longer and anchored in the upper jawbone near the Zygoma bone, which is denser and more cortical than the posterior maxillary bone. Because of the sturdy anchorage and widened distribution of stress of these tilted implants, it is often possible to place the prosthesis during the time of surgery, eliminating the need for a follow-up appointment.
At Coastal Jaw Surgery at Tampa, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and ready to provide you with personalized care designed for your comfort and convenience, delivered using the most cutting-edge dental technology available. STEPS INVOLVED IN ZYGOMATIC DENTAL IMPLANT
Prior to placing the Zygomatic Dental Implant, it will be necessary to address any preexisting decay and periodontal disease. Once these issues have been addressed, the process will begin with a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, and allows us to determine optimal placement of your implant using the nSequence® proprietary protocol.
Prior to placing the implant, a local anesthetic is administered along with dental sedation. Once you are sufficiently numbed, our Board-Certified Oral Surgeon will insert the Zygomatic Dental Implant through the alveolar crest and maxillary sinus and anchor the implant in the cheek bone (Zygoma). Following the placement of the implant, fixed teeth can be placed after on the same day for those patients who qualify for the Same Day Teeth® protocol or two to three days, after which you can begin to enjoy your bright full smile and renewed ability to chew and speak normally.
AFTERCARE FOR ZYGOMATIC DENTAL IMPLANTS
Following placement of your Zygomatic Dental Implants, post-procedural pain, swelling, and complications can be minimized or avoided if the following instructions are closely followed.
- Avoid disturbing the surgical area
- Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take Over the Counter (OTC) or prescription medication as directed.
- Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
- You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this should go away as the healing process progresses.
- Follow a soft food diet for approximately two weeks. As the healing progresses, you can begin to slowly reintroduce harder foods.
- Avoid tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process
- Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
- If possible, limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.
In addition to following these aftercare instructions, we strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your implant and overall oral health. By closely following aftercare instructions, scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you should enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications, and continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.
