Though about a third of the population ever even sees their wisdom teeth, the majority of those who indeed do will typically see them begin to erupt between the ages of 17-25, or sometimes earlier. As the wisdom teeth do erupt through the soft tissue, they have been known to cause a variety of negative impacts on your oral health. These most often include an increased risk of developing infections, cysts, jaw, and nerve damage, and even (nonmalignant) tumors. To avoid these unnecessary complications and to preserve your oral health, our team will recommend wisdom tooth removal for patients 14 years of age or older, and we also strongly recommend having your wisdom teeth removed before the root of the tooth has a chance to attach to the jawbone. One of the primary reasons we feel strongly about earlier removal is because there is less risk of damaging nerves and the intricate supporting structures, due to the surrounding bone being softer and the roots still not completely formed and planted. As we continue to age, the nerves will become more involved, the jawbone will become denser, and the roots fully formed, all increasing the risk of any surgical complications.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, when you walk through our door you will receive VIP Treatment delivered by dedicated professionals and ready to provide you with personalized care using the most cutting-edge dental technology available. For over three decades now, we have successfully provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with many periodontal services.

STEPS INVOLVED IN WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL TRINITY

With over five million wisdom teeth removed a year it is one of the most common tooth extraction procedures. The process begins at Coastal Jaw Surgery with a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. This provides our team with 3D images of your jawbone, the nerve pathways, teeth, soft tissues, and allows us to determine the exact positioning of your wisdom teeth. We begin the actual procedure by administering a local anesthesia. We may add an IV sedative is your comfort is in question. Once your gums are sufficiently numbed, an incision is made in your gum line to provide the team access to the wisdom tooth to be extracted. Next, we will need to remove any bone covering the tooth and to loosen any connective tissue if necessary. After this we will use very specialized surgical instruments to loosen the tooth, and if necessary, divide it to be removed in pieces. Once the tooth has been removed, the area is stitched closed and the procedure will be finished. If the wisdom tooth has erupted through the gumline the area is simply numbed and the tooth extracted with a dental tool.

AFTERCARE FOLLOWING WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL

After your wisdom teeth removal, swelling, post-procedural pain, and complications can be minimized or avoided if you the follow these instructions.

  • Leave the gauze pad over the surgical area for at least a half hour, after which you can remove and discard the gauze pad. If bleeding continues, another gauze pad can be placed. If bleeding does not stop, contact our office for additional instructions.
  • Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
  • Avoid disturbing the surgical area
  • Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take OTC or prescription medication as directed.
  • You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this should go away as the healing process progresses.
  • Avoid the use of tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process.
  • Avoid all spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
  • If possible, try to limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly right following surgery.

If you adhere to these aftercare instructions, you should enjoy a fast recovery with no complications. By neglecting to follow these instructions you increase your risk of developing a dry socket, which can be extremely painful. After you have followed these instructions and your healing is behind you, we then strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program. These preventative checkups include regular professional cleanings of your teeth and also allows us to keep track of your overall oral health. By taking these suggestions and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you not only will enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications but also continue to enjoy your bright and healthy smile.
