Close to a third of the population never get their wisdom teeth. The balance of those who do will usually see them begin to erupt between the ages of 17-25, sometimes earlier. As the wisdom teeth emerge through the gums, they might at some point cause a variety of negative impacts on your oral health. Some impacts include an increased risk of developing infections, cysts, jawbone, and nerve damage, and even (nonmalignant) tumors. To avoid these unnecessary complications even developing and to preserve your oral health, our seasoned staff recommends wisdom tooth removal after the age of 14 years, and strongly recommends having your wisdom teeth removed before the root of the tooth has the chance to attach to the jawbone. One of the primary reasons we suggest and recommend having your wisdom teeth removed at an earlier age is simply because there is less risk of damaging any nerves and supporting structures, since the surrounding bone is still softer and the roots still not completely planted. As we continue to age, the nerves will also become more involved, the jawbone becomes denser, and the roots become fully formed. These all increase the risk of surgical complications.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, each and every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by trained and dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and ready to provide you with both personalized care while using the most cutting-edge dental technology available today. For more than three decades, our team has proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with many periodontal services.

STEPS INVOLVED IN WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL TAMPA

Over five million people a year have their wisdom teeth removed making it one of the most performed tooth extraction procedures. Your procedure will begin with a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which provides our team with 3D images of your teeth, the jawbone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and allows us to determine the positioning of your wisdom teeth. Prior to beginning the procedure, it is necessary to administer a local anesthetic and sometimes also an IV sedation to ensure your comfort. When your soft tissue is sufficiently numbed, an incision is made in your gums to provide us with access to the impacted wisdom tooth we wish to remove. Next, we will have to remove any bone covering the tooth and to also loosen any connective tissue if necessary. After this, we will next use specialized surgical instruments to loosen the tooth, and if necessary, section it to be removed in smaller pieces. Once the tooth has been removed, the area is sutured closed and the procedure will be complete. If the wisdom tooth has erupted the tooth is simple extracted after the immediate area is numbed.

AFTERCARE FOLLOWING WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL

Following any wisdom tooth removal, post-procedural pain, swelling, and complications can be minimized and avoided if the following instructions are closely followed.

  • Avoid disturbing the surgical area
  • Leave the gauze pad over the surgical area for at least a half hour, after which you can remove and discard the gauze pad. If bleeding continues, another gauze pad can be placed. If bleeding does not stop, contact our office for additional instructions.
  • Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
  • Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take OTC or prescription medication as directed.
  • You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this should go away as the healing process progresses.
  • Follow a soft food diet for approximately 3-5 days, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing progresses.
  • If possible, limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.
  • Please avoid tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process.
  • Also avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.

Provided you follow these aftercare instructions, you should enjoy a fast recovery that will be free of complications. Neglecting to follow these instructions will increase your risk of developing a dry socket, which can be an extremely painful experience. In addition to following these simple aftercare instructions, we well strongly encourage you to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes consistent and regular professional cleanings of your teeth as well as allowing us to track your overall oral health. By closely following aftercare instructions, scheduling preventative checkups, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits at home, you will enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications, and also continue to enjoy a bright and healthy smile.
