Though not all people get their wisdom teeth, the majority of those who do will typically have them begin to erupt between the ages of 17-25, or even earlier. As wisdom teeth emerge, they can cause a variety of negative impacts on your oral health, including an increased risk of developing infections, cysts, jaw and nerve damage, and even (nonmalignant) tumors. To avoid developing unnecessary complications and preserve your oral health, our clinic recommends wisdom tooth removal for patients 14 years of age or older, and strongly recommends having your wisdom teeth removed before the root of the tooth attaches to the jawbone. One of the primary reasons we recommend having your wisdom teeth removed at an earlier age is because there is less risk of damaging nerves and structures, due to the surrounding bone being softer and the roots still not completely planted. As we age, the nerves become more involved, the jawbone denser, and the roots fully formed, increasing the risk of surgical complications.

At The Same Day Teeth clinic, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and ready to provide you with personalized care using the most cutting-edge dental technology available. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with many periodontal services.

STEPS INVOLVED IN WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL PALM HARBOR

Wisdom teeth removal is a commonly performed tooth extraction procedure. The process begins with a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which provides us with 3D images of your jawbone, the nerve pathways, soft tissues, and the teeth, and allows us to isolate the positioning of your wisdom teeth. Prior to beginning the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered along with IV sedation to ensure your comfort if necessary. Once the gums are sufficiently numbed, a small incision is made in your gum line to provide us access to the wisdom tooth. Then we will remove any bone that is covering the tooth and loosen connective tissue if necessary. Next, we will use specialized surgical instruments to loosen the tooth, and if necessary, divide it into pieces to remove. Once the tooth has been extracted, the area is stitched closed and the procedure will be finished

AFTERCARE FOLLOWING WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL

Following your wisdom teeth removal, post-procedural pain, swelling, and complications can be limited or avoided if you follow the instructions closely.

  • Leave the gauze pad over the surgical area for at least a half hour, then you can remove and discard the gauze pad. If bleeding persists, just place another gauze pad. If your bleeding does not stop, contact our office for additional instructions.
  • Do your very best to avoid disturbing the surgical area.
  • Post-procedural pain will develop once the anesthetic wears off. When you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take over the counter pain medication or prescription medication as directed.
  • Place ice packs on the area where the surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
  • You may experience some tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this will go away as the healing process progresses.
  • It is best to follow a soft food diet for approximately 3-5 days, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing progresses.
  • Avoid any tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process.
  • Avoid any and all spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
  • If possible try to limit any intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly for 24 hours following surgery.

Provided you follow these aftercare instructions, you should enjoy a reasonably fast recovery that is free of complications. By neglecting to follow these instructions will increase your risk of developing a dry socket, which is extremely painful. In addition to following these aftercare instructions, we also encourage all patients to follow a six-month ongoing prevention program, which includes regular professional teeth cleaning and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By closely following aftercare instructions, scheduling regular evaluations, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits at home, you should continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.
