Not all people get their wisdom teeth. The majority of those who do will typically have them start to erupt between the ages of 17-25, or even earlier. As wisdom teeth begin to emerge, they can cause a variety of potential negative impacts on your oral health, including an increased risk of developing infections, jaw and nerve damage, cysts, and even (nonmalignant) tumors. To avoid developing these unnecessary complications and be preventative regarding your oral health, our trained staff recommends considering wisdom tooth removal for patients 14 years of age or older, and we strongly recommend this before the root of the tooth attaches to the jawbone. One of the primary reasons we recommend having your wisdom teeth removed earlier versus later is because there is less risk of damaging nerves and supporting structures. This is because the surrounding bone is softer, and the roots still not completely planted. The nerves become more involved as we age, the jawbone denser, and the roots become fully formed, increasing the risk of surgical complications.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our front door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by a team of dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and are always ready to provide you with personalized care along with the most cutting-edge dental technology available. We have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with many periodontal services for over three decades.

STEPS INVOLVED IN WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL SPRING HILL

The removal of wisdom teeth is one of the most commonly performed tooth extraction procedures. The procedure will begin with a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. This will provide us with 3D images of your jawbone, the nerve pathways, the teeth, and all soft tissues, and allow us to determine the positioning of your wisdom teeth. Prior to performing the actual extraction, a local anesthetic is administered, sometimes paired with an IV sedation to ensure your comfort. Once you are adequately numbed, an incision is made in your gum line to provide us access to the impacted wisdom tooth. Next, we will remove any bone that might be covering the tooth and loosen the connective tissue if necessary. Following this, we will use specialized surgical instruments to loosen the tooth, and if it is necessary, we will section it to be removed in pieces. Once the tooth has been removed, the area is stitched closed and the procedure will be complete. If the wisdom tooth has erupted, it is nothing more than a simple tooth extraction with anesthesia.

AFTERCARE FOLLOWING WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL

Following wisdom teeth removal, swelling, post-procedural pain, and complications can be minimized or avoided if the following instructions are closely followed.

  • Leave the gauze pad over the surgical area for at least a half hour, after which you can remove and discard the gauze pad. If bleeding continues, another gauze pad can be placed. If bleeding does not stop, contact our office for additional instructions.
  • Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take OTC or prescription medication as directed.
  • Avoid disturbing the surgical area
  • Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
  • You might experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this should go away as the healing process progresses.
  • Avoid tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process.
  • Follow a soft food diet for approximately 3-5 days, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing progresses.
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
  • If possible, limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.

If you closely follow these aftercare instructions, you will enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications. If you do not follow these instructions it increases your risk of developing a dry socket, which can be extremely painful. In addition to following these simple aftercare instructions, we also strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month consistent maintenance program, which includes regular preventative, professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. If you indeed follow these aftercare instructions, schedule regular maintenance, and continue to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you will not only enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications, but also continue to enjoy a bright and healthy smile.
