Though not all people get their wisdom teeth, the majority of those who do will typically have them begin to erupt between the ages of 17-25, or even earlier. As wisdom teeth emerge, they can cause a variety of negative impacts on your oral health, including an increased risk of developing infections, cysts, jaw and nerve damage, and even (nonmalignant) tumors. To avoid developing unnecessary complications and preserve your oral health, our clinic recommends wisdom tooth removal for patients 14 years of age or older, and strongly recommends having your wisdom teeth removed before the root of the tooth attaches to the jawbone. One of the primary reasons we recommend having your wisdom teeth removed at an earlier age is because there is less risk of damaging nerves and structures, due to the surrounding bone being softer and the roots still not completely planted. As we age, the nerves become more involved, the jawbone denser, and the roots fully formed, increasing the risk of surgical complications.

At The Same Day Teeth clinic, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and ready to provide you with personalized care using the most cutting-edge dental technology available. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with many periodontal services.

STEPS INVOLVED IN WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL PALM HARBOR

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most commonly performed tooth extraction procedures. The process will begin with a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, and allow us to determine the positioning of your wisdom teeth. Prior to performing the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered along with IV sedation to ensure your comfort. Once you are sufficiently numbed, an incision is made in your gum line to provide us access to the wisdom tooth. Next, we will remove any bone covering the tooth and loosen connective tissue if necessary. Following this, we will use specialized surgical instruments to loosen the tooth, and if necessary, section it to be removed in pieces. Once the tooth has been removed, the area is stitched closed and the procedure will be complete.

AFTERCARE FOLLOWING WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL

Following a tooth extraction, post-procedural pain, swelling, and complications can be minimized or avoided if the following instructions are closely followed.

  • Avoid disturbing the surgical area
  • Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take OTC or prescription medication as directed.
  • Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
  • You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this should go away as the healing process progresses.
  • Follow a soft food diet and chew on the opposite side of your mouth from the extracted tooth for the first 3-5 days, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing progresses.
  • Avoid tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
  • If possible, limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.

In addition to following these aftercare instructions, we strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By closely following aftercare instructions, scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you should enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications, and continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.
