Cleaning Implant Supported Dentures

Cleaning Implant Supported Dentures

To preserve the integrity of your implant supported dentures and reduce your risk of developing oral health issues, it is important to practice proper oral maintenance daily. One of the most important things you can do to maintain the health of your implant supported dentures is to clean them twice daily. If your implant supported dentures are removable, it is important to remove the detachable appliances and clean them thoroughly. It is equally important that you clean around the attachments, gum areas, and artificial teeth. It is also recommended that you do not sleep with removable implant supported dentures as doing so increases your risk of infections and other complications.

In addition to following these self-care practices, we also strongly encourage our patients to schedule ongoing maintenance at least every six months or with greater regularity. During these examinations, we will provide a professional cleaning and monitor the overall health of your implant supported dentures, making any adjustments if necessary and ensuring there are no other underlying issues. Although there may not be anything noticeably wrong with your implant supported dentures, there are times when it is necessary to take x-rays to ensure that your implants, attachments, and abutments are placed correctly and identify and address issues that might otherwise go overlooked. Additionally, these visits will help determine if your clips and/or other attachments are ready to be replaced.

Aftercare Following Implant Supported Dentures Procedure

During the time following a bone graft and/or dental implant procedure, you may experience some discomfort and swelling for up to two weeks, though many patients are completely healed after one week. During this recovery, pain can typically be managed with OTC, Over-the-Counter, or prescription pain medication, which should be taken as directed. Swelling can be controlled with ice therapy, placing ice over the swollen area for twenty-minute intervals. It is also common to experience sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures for a few days following the procedure, but this should go away soon.

Additional post-procedural steps and modifications to cleaning your teeth that are important to follow include:

  • Do not disturb the surgical area
  • Follow a soft food diet and keep food away from the surgical site.
  • Use Stellalife as directed, once StellaLife is completed use hot salt mouthwashes for the first week, making sure the mouthwash is not too hot. To speed up the healing process, hold the mouthwash over the surgical site until it cools.
  • Do not use tobacco products or alcohol for as long as possible to speed up the healing process
  • Do not use a straw or spit for the first 24 hours
  • Limit physical activity
  • Resume brushing your other teeth including the prosthesis but avoid the surgical site for the first few days. Once the tenderness diminishes (approx. 1-2 weeks), you can begin to carefully clean over the surgical area.
