What are Implant Supported Dentures?

Implant supported dentures are an overdenture held in place by titanium posts that are strategically placed in your jaw. Compared to conventional dentures which rest directly on your jaw and require denture adhesives, implant supported dentures provide a superior level of support and stability and will restore your teeth back to full functionality. Implant supported dentures are also designed to look and feel like your natural teeth, allowing you to experience restored confidence in your smile. If you are missing teeth and have a sufficient amount of jawbone to support an implant, implant supported dentures may be the right option for you.

Implant supported dentures can either be removable or fixed and bar-retained or ball-retained. Removable dentures simply mean that you can remove them whenever necessary, most commonly to clean them and prior to going to sleep. Fixed implant supported dentures, however, remain in place and will only be removed by your prosthodontist if necessary. Implant supported dentures can be cared for as if they were your natural teeth. Compared to conventional dentures, implant supported dentures provide much more stability, especially in the lower jaw.

What is the Implant Supported Denture Procedure?

If you are considering implant supported dentures, it is important to understand that the process for placing implant supported dentures can take several months to complete. To help you better understand what this process is like and what you can expect throughout, please refer to the following.

Initial Examination

Prior to beginning the implant supported dentures process, you will need to schedule an appointment for a free consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for implants. During this appointment, we will conduct a thorough examination to determine the underlying reason why implant supported dentures might be necessary and whether any preparatory procedures need to be performed before beginning the implant supported dentures process. Possible preparatory procedures include treating gum disease, tooth extraction, or a bone graft. Diagnostic tests will be taken to determine whether a bone graft is necessary.

Dental Implant Placement

The implant supported dentures process will begin with administration of a local anesthetic and often dental sedation. Once you are sufficiently numbed, your gums are pulled back around the missing tooth and a small hole is drilled into your jawbone, into which the titanium posts are placed. Once properly positioned, this post will then act as the root for your replacement tooth. Once the dental implant has been placed in the jawbone, the process of osseointegration will begin. Osseointegration is the direct functional and structural connection between the surface of the implant and your living bone, which will take place over several months. The time it takes for osseointegration to complete will vary depending on your body’s natural healing process.

Placement of the Crown

Once your bone has fused to the implant and is providing sufficient stability, it will be time to attach the abutment and finally the dentures. Once your crown has been tested to ensure the bite is correct, you can begin to treat your new implant supported dentures just like the rest of your natural teeth.
