Many patients with traditional dentures will become frustrated at how much maintenance is necessary and soon find them to become inconvenient, unstable, and even sometimes painful. Unlike these standard and traditional dentures, which just rest on your gums, implant-supported dentures spring hill fl are an overdenture which are held firmly and securely in place by strategically placed implanted posts. Implant-supported dentures provide you with a superior level of support and stability and eliminate the need for denture adhesives. They also give you back your ability to eat the foods you used to enjoy, and they will restore your bright, healthy smile. Implant-supported dentures are often recommended now for patients when they are missing all their teeth, but who still have enough jawbone density to support an implant. If you do not have enough bone to support the implant, it will then be necessary to have a bone graft procedure prior to the placement of the dental implant. The implant-supported dentures are designed to be either removable or permanent.
At Coastal Jaw Surgery, each and every patient who walks through our front door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by a team of dedicated professionals who are the best in their fields and are ready to provide you with personalized care using the most advanced dental technology available today. STEPS INVOLVED IN IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURES SPRING HILL FL
The very first step prior to starting to place implant-supported dentures is to address any preexisting decay and periodontal disease. We may find it necessary to perform a dental bone graft if the jaw has begun to atrophy and lacks the proper density to support the implants. Once these initial issues have been addressed, we proceed with a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. This state-of-the art technology will provide our team with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth. These images allow us to determine the optimal placement of your implants using the best digital assessment software and related technology to ensure that your treatment is totally customized and unique for your situation. Many dental providers, especially those that are corporate-based, treat everyone the same way with the one-size-fits-all mentality. Your teeth and gums are as unique and different as your fingerprints and as a result, we draw from a variety of digital-based, precision solutions that will return to you your beautiful natural smile and restore your ability to eat the foods that you enjoy. Our deliberate, unique approach not only includes a comprehensive treatment plan just for you, but we also will give you a thorough explanation and continue to monitor your ongoing follow-up care.
Prior to starting to place the implant, a local anesthetic is administered to numb your gums. A dental sedation will be added if deemed necessary. Once your gums are adequately numbed, our dental implant surgeon will perform a minor surgical procedure and strategically place the titanium implant or implants into your jawbone. Once the titanium post or posts are appropriately placed, it will now take several months for your jawbone to grow around the posts through a process called osseointegration. Once this osseointegration process is finished and the posts have fused into your jawbone, we will then add extensions to the posts. Next your final, permanent denture, which has been designed to restore both the aesthetic appearance and functionality of your natural bite, will be placed. There are nylon snaps added into the backside of each denture tray to match perfectly with the posts. These snaps lock on to the post extensions which now deliver the stability of the implant support, just like a natural root.
Not only do the implant supported dentures offer the stability and strength as a major benefit, but the posts act as roots. The posts stop the jawbone from atrophying further, they deliver pressure sensations through biting and chewing, and they also deliver temperature changes between hot and cold. The implants are the next best thing to having your real natural teeth.
AFTERCARE FOR IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURES
Following the placement of your implant-supported dentures; swelling, post-procedural pain, and complications can be avoided or minimized if the following instructions are closely followed.
- Post-procedural pain usually develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel any discomfort or pain, take Over the Counter (OTC) or prescription medication as directed.
- Avoid disturbing the surgical area whatsoever.
- To control any swelling, place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time.
- Follow a soft food diet for at least two weeks after the placement of your implant-supported dentures or longer if indicated in your aftercare instructions. As the healing continues, you can begin to slowly reintroduce harder foods.
- You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this will go away as the healing process progresses.
- Avoid any tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process.
- Avoid the spitting, rinsing, or using of a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
- Do your best to limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.
Once the healing process is completed, it will be important to perform regular maintenance if you have a removable implant-supported denture. Every night take the denture tray out and clean the denture and around the attachments. It might be necessary to replace the attachment of the bar-retained denture every 6-12 months. In addition to following the suggested aftercare instructions, we will strongly suggest you follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which always includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your implant-supported dentures, any wear on those nylon snaps, and your overall oral health. By closely following our simple aftercare instructions, scheduling this consistent and preventative maintenance, and continuing to follow your good daily oral hygiene habits, you will enjoy a speedy recovery that is free of any complications, and you will continue to enjoy that undervalued asset of a healthy smile.
