Dental Implants Versus Dental Bridges

Dental Implants Versus Dental Bridges

Patients with missing teeth have several different treatment options, two of the most popular being dental implants and dental bridges. Dental implants are comprised of three parts: a post, which is made of titanium and inserted into your jawbone, an abutment, which attaches to the post, and a crown which attaches to the abutment and replaces your missing tooth. A dental bridge consists of an abutment that is connected to healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth and a false tooth that replaces the missing tooth or teeth. The three most common types of dental bridges are Maryland, cantilever, and traditional. Dental bridges are most commonly recommended for patients who have experienced bone loss and/or who have teeth that are adjacent to the missing tooth that need caps or crowns.

Dental Implants Vs Dental Bridges

If you are trying to decide between dental implants and dental bridges, consider the following differences.

  • Time involved: Although dental implants provide a more permanent and secure solution, the time involved in having this procedure performed is significantly longer than a dental bridge and will require multiple appointments to complete.
  • Cost involved: Because the dental implant requires multiple procedures and is designed to provide a long-lasting solution, the cost of the procedure is also higher than a dental bridge. On the other hand, some of the procedures take place several months from one another, making it easier to pay for the procedure in increments and possibly allowing for your insurance plan to cover different parts of the procedure if you schedule a procedure close to the end of the year.
  • Insurance coverage: Dental bridges are more likely to be covered under insurance plans than dental implants.
  • Durability: Despite taking longer to complete and costing more up front, one of the biggest benefits of dental implants is that they are much more durable than dental bridges, which typically need to be replaced every five to seven years, whereas dental implants may last a lifetime, provided you take good care of them.
  • Maintenance: Dental bridges require modified maintenance, whereas dental implants can be cleaned like your natural teeth.
  • Aesthetics: Although the differences are slight, dental implants will look and feel more natural than dental bridges.
