Tooth Extractions for problem teeth
Whenever possible, preserving your natural teeth is the preferred approach. However, a tooth extraction may be necessary when a tooth is too damaged or compromised to be successfully restored. Common reasons for extraction include severe decay, infection, fractures, advanced periodontal disease, or overcrowding.
Wisdom tooth removal is another common type of extraction, particularly for older teens and young adults when the teeth are impacted, poorly positioned, or likely to cause future problems.
After a tooth is removed, the surrounding jawbone can gradually lose volume because it is no longer receiving stimulation from the tooth root. Depending on your treatment needs, socket preservation or dental implant placement may be recommended to help maintain bone and prepare the area for a future replacement tooth.

Steps Involved in Tooth Extraction
Prior to performing a tooth extraction, we will conduct a thorough examination of your oral health to determine any underlying conditions that need to be addressed and, if necessary, take a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, which allows us to make informed treatment decisions.
During the tooth extraction process, we will do everything we can to ensure that you experience minimal discomfort, which is why we offer varying levels of sedation, including oral sedatives, nitrous oxide, and intravenous (IV) sedation. Once you are sedated, the extraction process will begin. If a simple extraction is being performed, the tooth will be loosened using an instrument called an elevator and removed with forceps. While sedation will ensure you do not experience pain during this process, you will experience a sensation of pressure as the tooth is being removed. If your tooth is impacted, an incision is made in your gum line to provide access to the tooth. Next, we will remove any bone covering the tooth and loosen connective tissue if necessary. Following this, we will use specialized surgical instruments to loosen the tooth and, if necessary, section it to be removed in pieces. With either type of extraction, once the tooth has been removed, the area is stitched shut, and the procedure will be complete.
Aftercare Following Tooth Extraction
Following a tooth extraction, post-procedural pain, swelling, and complications can be minimized or avoided if the following instructions are closely followed.
- Avoid disturbing the surgical area
- Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take OTC or prescription medication as directed.
- Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
- You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this should go away as the healing process progresses.
- Follow a soft food diet and chew on the opposite side of your mouth from the extracted tooth for the first 3-5 days, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing progresses.
- Avoid tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process
- Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
- If possible, limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.
In addition to following these aftercare instructions, we strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By closely following aftercare instructions, scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you should enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications and continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.
