Full Mouth Dental Implants Recovery Time
The full mouth dental implants trinity fl process takes place over several months and involves several different procedures, all of which have different recovery periods. It may also be necessary to perform additional procedures to prepare your mouth for full mouth dental implants. For example, if you have to have a tooth or multiple teeth extracted prior to implant placement, you can plan on having a recovery period of around 7-10 days or longer depending on your overall healing ability. Patients who require a bone graft procedure to create a sufficient amount of jawbone to secure your implants can expect a recovery period of at least three to six months before the graft has fully integrated and the implants can be placed.
Once you are ready to begin the full mouth dental implant process, the first procedure will be the placement of the titanium posts into your jawbone. The reason these posts are made of titanium is because this material is able to fuse with your natural bone over time. This is a gradual process that can happen as quickly as three months or six months or longer depending on your body’s natural healing ability. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to speed up this process, it simply has to happen naturally. Once the post has completed the osseointegration process, the abutment and crowns can be placed. While you will not have a recovery period following placement of your new teeth, it will take some time to adjust to how they feel. But don’t worry- in a few weeks they will begin to feel just like your natural teeth.
Aftercare Instructions
To ensure you avoid complications and recover quickly, be sure to closely follow any aftercare instructions, such as antibiotic treatment or avoiding any physical activity for a period of time. During this recovery period, you will experience some swelling and mild discomfort. Ice therapy and over the counter medications are often sufficient in managing these issues, but prescription pain medication may be prescribed if necessary.
In addition to pain management, be sure to follow these guidelines during your recovery:
- Follow a soft food diet for at least two weeks and longer if possible
- Avoid foods that are cold or hot, slowly reintroducing them as discomfort subsides
- Do not use tobacco or alcohol for several days or longer
- Do not spit or use a straw for 24 hours minimum
- Avoid touching the surgical area
- Keep physical activities to a minimum and avoid any high impact situations
In addition to following these guidelines, it is also important to practice good oral hygiene. Even though they are not your natural teeth, continue treating your full mouth dental implants as if they were. Be sure to continue brushing your teeth twice daily. It is also important that you continue scheduling regular checkups at least every six months so we can evaluate the health of your implants and address any issues that may have developed.
By following these guidelines, you will enjoy a bright new smile for many years to come!
