Wilckodontics (Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics)

Wilckodontics (Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics) is an innovative orthodontic treatment that significantly reduces length of orthodontic treatment time by accelerating tooth movement and enhancing bone augmentation and remodeling through the removal of a portion of the external surface of the alveolar bone. Removing this portion of bone causes the bone to soften, which allows for teeth to move to their desired positions more quickly. In addition to providing faster results, Wilckodontics also results in a more intact periodontium, due to increased alveolar volume that develops following the healing process. Am I a Good Candidate for Wilckodontics?

Provided your adult teeth have grown in, almost anyone is a good candidate for Wilckodontics. Although there should be no shame involved in wearing braces, the fact is that adults and children alike often feel self-conscious when told they have to wear an orthodontic appliance. This can be especially true for adults who have high profile and public professions, or for adults who are avoiding having necessary treatment and jeopardizing their oral health because of concern over the stigma attached to wearing braces.

Many young adults whose adult teeth have come in are drawn to the Wilckodontics procedure because of the reduced treatment time, and will often schedule the initial appointment around Christmas break or close to the end of the school year/beginning of summer. By strategically scheduling the Wilckodontics procedure, young adults can reduce the amount of time they need to wear braces around their peers to a few months.

Steps Involved in the Wilckodontics Process

Prior to performing Wilckodontics, we will conduct a thorough examination of your oral health to determine any underlying conditions that need to be addressed and take a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, which allows us to make informed treatment decisions.

During the Wilckodontics process, we will do everything we can to ensure that you experience minimal discomfort, which is why we offer varying levels of sedation, including oral sedatives, nitrous oxide, and intravenous (IV) sedation. Once you are sedated, the procedure will begin by pulling back gum tissue covering your tooth and cutting away part of the external surface of your alveolar bone, as doing so will temporarily decrease the mineral content of this bone, which allows your braces to speed up the movement of your teeth to the desired position. By the time the teeth have reached the proper position, the alveolar bone will have healed, and in fact, will be even stronger than it was before.
