Why Do I Need Sinus Lift?

What Do I Need a Sinus Lift?

The first step in the sinus lift procedure is scheduling an initial evaluation to determine whether you require a sinus lift procedure and to create a detailed treatment plan designed to meet your specific needs. During this initial evaluation, we will thoroughly examine your oral health to determine any underlying conditions that need to be addressed and take diagnostic images with a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth. This information will allow us to determine the measurements of existing bone and the health of your sinus cavity.

Following this evaluation, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled. To ensure that our patients are as comfortable as possible, we proudly provide free Wi-Fi for your tablet, phone, or computer, as well as complimentary beverages, comfortable reclining chairs, blankets, and neck pillows. Our Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are also certified to safely administer all types of sedation, including intravenous (IV) anesthesia. One of the benefits associated with this type of sedation is that you will likely not even remember the procedure being performed.

Steps Involved in the Sinus Lift Procedure

As soon as dental sedation and a local anesthetic have been administered and you are comfortable, the sinus lift procedure will begin with a member of our staff making a tiny incision into your gums, which will provide access to your sinus membrane. Next, we will lift the membrane up, creating just enough space to place the bone graft. Once in place, we will conclude the procedure by stitching up your gums and cleaning the surgical site. Though not always a viable option, when possible we will also place the dental implant following placement of the bone graft using a protocol invented by our team called the crestal sinus lift; however, application of this procedure will be on a case by case basis.

For all other patients, it will take several months for the bone graft to regenerate the amount of bone necessary to support an implant. We will continue to monitor this regeneration process, and as soon as we are satisfied that enough bone has been regenerated, your dental implant can be placed.
