What is Oral Surgery

What is Oral Surgery?

Unlike standard dental procedures which can be performed in most clinics, oral and maxillofacial surgery is often reserved for more complex dental issues and medical conditions and tends to be focused on areas like facial trauma surgery, facial reconstructive surgery, or dental implants. Certification to become an oral and maxillofacial surgeon requires an additional six years of education, two of which are to attain a medical degree. Oral surgeons must complete the same requirements as a general dentist in addition to a four-to-six-year surgical residency program, during which they will receive training in oral surgery, anesthesia, oral pathology and other necessary fields of study. Once this residency is over, they must complete a board certification examination, after which they are certified to perform oral surgical procedures.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, we are committed to providing you with a comprehensive range of oral surgical procedures delivered by top oral health professionals in the fields of periodontal services and implant dentistry. Our clinics offer a range of oral surgical procedures that include, but are not limited to:

  • Same Day Teeth®: By utilizing state-of-the-art technology, we can determine the optimal placement of your implants and secure a bar-supported, immediate-load, or full-arch restoration in just one visit. This innovative oral surgical procedure bypasses the otherwise time-consuming process of traditional dental implants, which can take multiple appointments spread out over several months to complete.
  • Crown Lengthening: This simple procedure can either be performed as part of a dental crown placement or to help correct patients who have a gummy smile. To create a harmonious balance between your visible teeth and gums, we simply remove excess gum tissue using a scalpel, laser or both, after which you will have a more balanced, healthy looking smile.
  • Osseous Surgery: Patients with severe periodontal disease who have not had success with alternative treatment methods such as deep cleaning or modifications to self-care may require osseous surgery to correct the underlying issue. This simple procedure involves removing infected gum tissue and diseased bone from the pockets of your teeth, after which the gums are stitched up and have an opportunity to heal.
