What is IV Sedation Dentistry?

Having some trepidation about going to the dentist is very common, but most people understand that although there may be some discomfort involved, scheduling regular exams are necessary to maintain good oral health. There are, however, as high as 15% of the population in the United States with dental anxiety. Because it provokes feelings of stress, anxiety, or fear, patients with dental anxiety are much more likely to avoid scheduling exams, which can result in underlying issues developing and/or worsening. Common signs of dental anxiety include:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Visible signs of panic or distress, such as crying
  • Use of humor or aggressiveness to hide anxiety
  • Lowered blood pressure and possible fainting

Dental anxiety can develop naturally or be the result of past traumatic experiences. In some cases, individuals who have trust or control issues or conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, claustrophobia, or agoraphobia may also have dental anxiety. Whatever the reason may be, please know that we will do everything we can to help you overcome these issues and receive the care you need.

One of the ways we accomplish this is through our dental sedation trinity florida offerings, which include oral sedation and nitrous oxide. We also have Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons who are certified to administer, and who take continuing education on how to safely administer intravenous (IV) anesthesia. IV sedation is administered through your vein and will quickly put you in a place where you are not quite awake and not quite asleep. You will remain conscious, but will be less aware of what is happening while the procedure is performed. Though not recommended for all patients or all procedures, IV sedation is a good option for patients who are scheduled for longer, more intensive procedures or for patients who have significant dental anxiety. IV sedation offers many benefits in that it is easy to adjust the dose, it begins working very quickly, and it often results in periods of amnesia, meaning patients will not remember the treatment even happening.

IV Sedation Process

While IV sedation is a very effective method for helping patients with dental phobia, there are risks involved in administering it, which is why other sedation options will be considered and used if possible. Patients who have adverse reactions to sedation and the elderly may not be viable candidates for IV sedation or will receive a lower dose of IV sedation is necessary.

If you are scheduled for a procedure that will include IV sedation, do not eat or drink for eight hours leading up to the procedure. Once you are settled and comfortable, we will administer the IV sedation through a vein. The sedation will begin working very quickly, and while you will be conscious and able to respond to verbal commands, you will likely not recall the procedure having happened once the sedation has worn off. After having IV sedation, it is common to feel groggy or somewhat out of it. It is important that you arrange for a ride home following the procedure, either with a friend or family member or via Taxi or Uber.
