Titanium Vs. Ceramic Dental Implant

Titanium Vs. Ceramic Dental Implants

The most common types of material used for dental implants are titanium and ceramic. Given the differences in characteristics between the two materials, there may be instances when we will recommend one over the other. Titanium has been the industry standard for implants for decades and has a very high success rate; however, some patients may have an allergic reaction to this material, though this is very uncommon. Another important difference between these two implant material types is that titanium implants are often made of multiple components that are placed over a series of procedures, whereas ceramic dental implants are made of one piece and are placed in just one procedure.

As you consider whether titanium or ceramic dental implants are the best option for you, consider the following things:

  • Aesthetics: While both implant types will provide you with a natural looking, aesthetically pleasing smile, ceramic dental implants have an edge over titanium implants. Patients whose gums are thin may especially benefit from eliminating the risk of the metal showing through their gums.
  • Risk of complications: As with any procedure, there is some small risk of complications developing; however, ceramic implants have a slightly smaller chance of causing complications due to the fact that some people with metal allergies may have an adverse reaction to a titanium post.
  • Procedural time: Because ceramic dental implants are placed in one visit, you will only have to undergo one healing period, whereas titanium implants will require that you first have the post placed, then wait for six months while the post fuses with your bone, after which your permanent crown can be placed.
  • Safety: As mentioned earlier, titanium implants may pose some small risk among patients with metal allergies, but both procedures are very safe, and FDA approved.
  • Cost: The cost of ceramic implants is higher than titanium implants. If cost of treatment is a concern for you, please know that we have financing options available.
  • Durability: Both implant types are very durable and can be corrected if they become damaged or cracked.

How to Care For Your Titanium or Ceramic Dental Implant

It is important to practice good oral hygiene habits regardless of which type of implant you have placed. This includes brushing and flossing regularly, not using your teeth to open packages or gnaw on objects, eating a balanced diet that limits carbs and sugars, and scheduling periodontal evaluations every six months. Between the two implant options, ceramic implants are more likely to develop cracks or fractures, even when proper oral hygiene care is followed, however these cracks or fractures can usually be corrected fairly easily.
