Sinus Lift Side Effects

Sinus Lift Side Effects
Following your sinus lift procedure, you may experience a range of side effects caused by dental sedation, especially if a heavier form of dental sedation was administered. Side effects will vary from person to person but may include things such as headache, lightheadedness, dizziness, fogginess, nausea, vomiting, or dry mouth. If a heavier form of sedation was administered, such as IV or IM sedation, you may also experience amnesia and have no memory of the sinus lift procedure being performed. It is important to arrange for a ride home following your procedure if you will be receiving heavier forms of dental sedation.
Common Side Effects During Your Recovery Period
Once the effects of the dental sedation and local anesthetic have worn off, many patients will begin to experience any of the following side effects following their sinus lift procedure:
* Pain/Discomfort: Pain medication may be prescribed to help manage discomfort if over-the-counter pain relieving medication is not sufficient. It is important to take these medications as prescribed and avoid driving a vehicle or consuming alcohol while taking them. Common side effects that may occur from taking prescription medication include dizziness, lightheadedness, and nausea.
* Swelling: Ice packs placed over the area of swelling for fifteen minute intervals can help reduce swelling. Swelling should begin to subside within the first 48 hours.
* Bleeding: Gauze pads can be used to manage swelling. The gauze should first be wetted then wrung out and replaced every thirty minutes until the bleeding stops.
* Infection: One of the most common complications that can develop following a sinus lift procedure is an infection. To help reduce your risk of infection, antibiotics may be prescribed, which should be taken as directed.

In addition to addressing these common issues in the manner described, there are additional steps you can take to reduce your risk of having side effects and to speed up your recovery process, such as:
* Using a soft bristle toothbrush
* Rinsing gently and letting the water fall out of your mouth, rather than forcefully spitting it out
* Avoid using a Waterpik until you have completely healed
* Resting for 24-48 hours or longer if possible
* Not touching the wound with your finger or tongue
* Hydrating
* Not blowing your nose for as long as possible, as doing so can loosen your stitches or move your bone graft
* Not smoking or using a straw for at least three or four days, longer if possible
* Eating soft foods like yogurt and applesauce
* Using an antimicrobial mouthwash or taking antibiotics as prescribed to reduce your risk of infection
