ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY is needed when the jaws do not meet correctly, or the teeth do not seem to fit within the jaws.

A misaligned jaw can negatively impact normal daily functions, so it is important to contact Coastal Jaw Surgery if you suspect that treatment might be beneficial. Orthognathic surgery, which is used to realign your teeth and jaw, will improve the aesthetics and healthy function of your face.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and ready to provide you with personalized care using the most cutting-edge technology available. To schedule an appointment for a consultation regarding the benefits for you regarding orthognathic surgery, contact us today at (800) NEW-LOOK.

Orthognathic surgery is needed when the jaws do not meet correctly, or the teeth do not seem to fit within the jaws. Teeth can be straightened with orthodontics, and orthognathic surgery repositions misaligned jaws. This process will improve normal facial appearance and ensure that your teeth meet correctly and function properly.

Are You a Candidate for Orthognathic Surgery

If you have an improper bite or your jaws are positioned incorrectly you will benefit from orthognathic surgery. Natural jaw growth is a gradual process and sometimes the upper and lower jaws can grow at different rates. The result can be several problems that can affect your chewing function, speech, long-term oral health, and your appearance. An injury to the jaw or birth defects can also affect jaw alignment.

Coastal Jaw Surgery will evaluate the following signs and symptoms:

  • Any difficulty in chewing, biting, or swallowing.
  • Speech problems.
  • Consistent jaw or TMJ pain.
  • An open bite.
  • A protruding jaw.
  • Issues with breathing.
  • Gastrointestinal problems.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea.

The Benefits of Orthognathic Surgery

While orthodontics alone can correct bite problems if only the teeth are involved, orthognathic surgery may be required if the jaws also need repositioning. Orthognathic surgery can help to:

  • Make biting and chewing easier and improve chewing.
  • Correct problems with swallowing or speech.
  • Minimize excessive wear of certain teeth.
  • Correct bite fit or jaw closure alignment issues.
  • Correct facial imbalance, such as small chins, underbites, overbites and crossbites.
  • Improve the ability of the lips to fully close comfortably.
  • Relieve pain caused by temporomandibular joint disorder and other jaw problems.
  • Repair facial injury or birth defects.
  • Provides relief for obstructive sleep apnea.

Whether you are wanting to improve the appearance of your smile or want to overcome unnecessary discomfort that you are experiencing, the best thing that you can do is to schedule an evaluation with Coastal Jaw Surgery to review your options that are available.

The Orthognathic Surgery Process

Any of the listed symptoms can exist at birth or after birth because of hereditary, environmental, or traumatic influences. Before any treatment begins, Coastal Jaw Surgery will complete a thorough examination to make an accurate diagnosis. Using x-rays and other methods of digital imaging, we will assess and evaluate to allow us to explain your options for the best treatment method. When you are informed and comfortable about the aspects of your care, the decision to proceed with treatment is made together.

Surgery usually is performed inside your mouth, so no facial scars show on your chin, jaw or around your mouth. Sometimes small incisions may be required outside your mouth.

Your Coastal Jaw Surgery team will make cuts in the jawbones and move them into the correct position. Once the jaw movement is completed, tiny bone plates, screws, wires, or rubber bands might be used to secure the bones into their new position. These tiny screws become integrated into the jawbone over time.

Orthognathic surgery can be performed on the upper jaw, lower jaw, chin, or any combination of these. If you are a candidate for orthognathic surgery, we will collaborate with anyone else on your team during your treatment. The actual surgery will move your teeth and jaws into a new position that results in a more attractive, functional, and healthy facial relationship.

Orthognathic Surgery Aftercare

After surgery, Coastal Jaw Surgery will provide you with instructions. These usually include:

  • What you should eat.
  • Proper oral hygiene.
  • Avoiding tobacco products.
  • Avoiding all strenuous activity.
  • Necessary medications to control discomfort.
  • When you can return to work or school, which is usually in one to three weeks.

Healing usually takes about six weeks after surgery, but complete healing will take up to 12 weeks.

Cost of Orthognathic Surgery

The cost of your orthognathic surgery treatment will depend on a variety of factors, ranging from digital imaging to the extent of the corrective surgery, and (if applicable) your dental insurance plan coverage. At Coastal Jaw Surgery, we are committed to providing you with high-quality oral care in a manner that is both simple and efficient. To help meet your unique budget and needs, we offer the following financing options:

  • Carecredit® Healthcare Financing (interest free financing for dental care)
  • GreenSky® Patient Financing
  • Lending Club Patient Financing

We also accept traditional insurance, and as an additional courtesy, are happy to file and track your insurance claim and assist with insurance family plans. To help facilitate this process, please have your insurance information prepared at your appointment, including your insurance and identification card. To help you maximize your benefits, we are also happy to provide a written diagnostic report and X-rays to your insurance company if necessary.

Please note: Dental insurance only covers part of your total expenses; any remaining out-of-pocket expenses must be paid following service. We accept cash, debit cards, and most major credit cards (MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express).
