Infected Dental Implants
In a dental implant operation, as with any operation, sterility and cleanliness are a top concern. However, infections and complications as a result do occur. Infections can happen to people with Implants, even when they are following all the hygienic precautions. Whatever the source of infection is, it is helpful to understand the signs of infection. Knowing what to look for, and what to expect, can help prepare and protect you from problems.
Signs of Infection
- Red or Puffy Gums- Inflammation take many forms, but red is a common color associated with sensitivity. If your gums seems larger than usual, swollen, or “itchy” this could be a sign of infection. Infection and inflammation go hand in hand, any time you notice swelling, redness or sensitivity, this is probably a sign of infection or allergic reaction.
- Pain, discomfort during movement- As always, if you experience pain, contact your dentist or implant team immediately. Besides pain immediate after surgery, or during recovery, prolonged pain is not normal. If you are experiencing pain in your gums or jaw, and especially if you notice the implant moving, this could be an infection in your implant. Movement of the implant could also be associated with improper bonding. You will need to see your dentist immediately for confirmation, diagnosis, and treatment of the issue.
- Constant Bad Breath- Bad breath is usually related to bad bacteria in your mouth. Your mouth is filled with bacteria, bacteria is everywhere, but 99.9% of bacteria is harmless of inert. Bad bacteria is the root cause of infection. If there are foul tastes and smells coming from your mouth, especially musky ones, and you have been following adequate hygiene routines–this could be a sure sign of infection.
- Blood or Pus- I know I know, this one is cringeworthy, but it happens and you need to be aware. Blood and bleeding in your mouth is not the craziest thing, but it is usually a sign of infection and inflammation. The most common cause of bleeding in your gums, Gingivitis, is exactly that–the inflammation of your gums due to bad bacteria. Regardless of the situation, if you are routinely experiencing bleeding in your mouth, seek an appointment with your Dentist for a consultation. Pus is a foul smelling discharge that comes from infection. If there is any white or yellow discharge in your mouth, it is time to seek Dental professional attention.
- Movement or Obvious damage to your implant- Dental implants should be secure until they are removed or loosened by a professional. If you notice any damage to your implant, or any looseness to it, see your dentist before there is time for bacteria to work its’ way in. Also, if brushing or flossing around your implant causes bleeding, consult with your dental health professional as soon as possible.
The key is diligence. Yes, it is possible to carry an infection, even in a brand new dental implant. Follow your hygienic protocols, consult with your dental hygienist, and maintain regular cleanings and visits with your Dentist. If you notice any of the signs above, be prepared to get in and see someone, and keep the area clean and protected as much as possible.
