How Long Does It Take Gum Grafting to Heal?

How Long Does Gum Grafting Take to Heal?

The time it takes to heal following a gum graft will largely depend on the type of gum grafting palm harbor fl that is performed. For a connective tissue graft, which involves cutting skin at the palate and removing tissue from under that flap, a free gingival graft, which involves removing skin from the roof of the mouth as grafting material, or a pedicle graft, which involves pulling down tissue from the surrounding tooth over the exposed root, the healing process will be considerably longer compared to the use of allograft or donor material, which is far less invasive and will result in a much faster healing process.

For patients who are not using donor grafting material, the healing process typically takes around 7-10 days, although most pain and discomfort should begin to alleviate and disappear within 2-4 days. During this period, any pain or discomfort experienced is typically mild enough that an individual can continue working and engaging in most of their normal day-to-day activities, although it is advised that strenuous or high-impact physical activities are avoided for as long as possible, especially for the first one to two weeks following the procedure.

Aftercare During the Recovery Process

Immediately after your procedure, it will take some time for the sedation and/or local anesthetic to wear off. Once they do, you may begin to feel some mild discomfort, which can typically be alleviated with a combination of over-the-counter pain medication and/or ice therapy. You may also be prescribed antibiotics and pain medication, which should be taken as directed.

Additional steps you can take to facilitate the healing process include:

  • Do not disturb the surgical area and avoid brushing the graft site until the area has healed
  • Use gauze over the site to control bleeding
  • Avoid hard or crunchy foods and follow a soft food diet for up to two weeks or longer if possible
  • Avoid foods that are extremely hot or cold until tooth sensitivity improves
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol as much as possible, as both will inhibit the healing process
  • Do not use a straw, rinse, or spit for at least 24 hours following your procedure
  • Avoid moderate to intense physical activity for at least 72 hours or longer following your procedure

Provided you closely follow these aftercare instructions and continue to practice good oral hygiene habits, you should enjoy a fast recovery process and avoid the need for similar procedures in the future. If you follow these steps and continue to experience excessive bleeding or pain that does not improve, contact our office as soon as possible.
