Gum Appearance and Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy

A gingivectomy is a procedure commonly used to treat gum recession and inflammation. Millions of adults have a form of gum disease which can cause serious, long-term consequences when it remains untreated. This procedure is one of the few treatment options which can effectively reverse the side effects associated with gum disease and restore the patient’s oral health.

During a gingivectomy, a dental professional removes excess gum tissue. Below are three reasons why the procedure is performed:

  1. Infected gum tissue is removed to prevent the spread if infection
  2. Gum tissue is removed to improve the appearance of the patient’s smile and make it easier to practice good oral hygiene
  3. Treat receding gums caused by an issue such as an injury or aging

Gum Disease

A gingivectomy is typically the suggested treatment when the gums start to pull away from the teeth. This results in the formation of deep pockets below the gumline which easily accumulate plaque, bacteria, and tartar. The pockets also make it difficult to maintain good oral hygiene.

It is common for dental professionals to perform the procedure with traditional dental instruments such as a scalpel. Modern dentistry has introduced the use of lasers which are highly effective in targeting and removing gum tissue. While the use of lasers for treatment is quickly gaining popularity, it is also more expensive and requires additional training. One benefit of using lasers for the procedure is that it also expedites the recovery time. Some dental professionals still prefer the use of scalpels for treatment as it is affordable and highly effective. Patients should discuss the procedure and the preferred tool with their dental professional.

Procedure

The treatment area will be numbed with a local anesthetic. Once numb, gum tissue is removed and the gumline is shaped. The wound is then sealed with sutures, dental putty, or bandages to protect the gums while they heal. During the recovery process, patients should eat soft foods and avoid consuming hot, crunchy, and hard foods or drinks as these things can easily damage the treatment site.

Aftercare

Patients can use a warm saltwater rinse to keep the mouth clean during the first 24 hours or recovery from the procedure. Within a day or two, patients can resume brushing but should avoid brushing around the treatment site. Avoid flossing near the treatment site for at least a few days away to ensure the gums can fully heal without being disturbed.

Benefits

The key benefit associated with a gingivectomy is that the gums are restored. It is critical for patients to be diligent in practicing good oral hygiene in order to maintain the benefits of the procedure. This includes at least twice daily brushing and daily flossing in addition to routine visits to the dentist for an examination and professional cleaning.  When patients fail to maintain good oral hygiene, they are at risk for a return of gum disease and receding gums.

Patients should not use tobacco products during their recovery from the procedure as it can delay the healing process and inhibit the body’s ability to fight infection. Many patients find that this is an excellent opportunity to stop smoking or chewing tobacco for good.
