ARE ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS SAFE?

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, our patient’s safety is our top priority. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with dental implant and oral surgery services. Along with maintaining a private practice, Dr. Pikos also founded the Pikos Institute, a globally recognized teaching organization that provides surgical and technology-based training for clinicians throughout the country to perform predictable, prosthetically driven implant dentistry. As leaders in the field of implant dentistry, we proudly offer free consultations for patients who are missing a tooth or multiple teeth to determine what treatment options are viable and best suited for their particular treatment needs, including Zygomatic dental implants.

Zygomatic dental implants are most commonly performed as an alternative to bone grafting or sinus floor elevation, which are procedures performed to increase the volume of the bone to ensure it can support a traditional dental implant. In addition to eliminating the need for these procedures, which increase the cost of treatment and the time required to complete the dental implant process, the Zygomatic implant process is also less invasive and provides a viable alternative for patients for whom bone grafts cannot be harvested.

While the Zygomatic dental implant process does have a high success rate and is considered a very safe procedure and effective alternative to bone grafting, it does carry certain unique risks that are important to be aware of, the most common being sinusitis. If sinusitis does occur following placement of a Zygomatic implant, there is a good chance it can be corrected, however treatment can be difficult, and the loss of the implant is a possibility. If this or other complications do occur, such as periimplantitis or osseointegration failure, we will do everything we can to treat the issue without compromising the functionality of your restoration and ensuring its continued functionality.

Though rare, additional issues that have the potential to develop during or following Zygomatic implant surgery include:

  • Vestibular cortical fenestration
  • Temporary sensory nerve deficits
  • Orbital penetration and injury
  • Oroantral fistula formation
  • Subconjunctival and periorbital
  • Intraoral soft tissue problems
  • Moderate nasal bleeding
  • Subcutaneous malar emphysema,
  • Problems and difficulty with speech and oral hygiene

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved with the Zygomatic implant procedure, especially given that the procedure requires dealing with delicate anatomical structures, which is why it is essential that you have this procedure performed by people who excel in their field. Our highly trained staff are well equipped to deal with the complexities of this clinically demanding procedure, which requires a mastery of the zygomatic curve intricacies, a deep understanding of complex anatomical structures, and the ability to operate with limited intraoperative visibility.
