Laser Gum Surgery & Treatment for advanced periodontal procedures

Laser gum surgery and treatment is an advanced treatment method that can be used for crown lengthening procedures, frenectomies, localized hemostasis, or a biopsy, but is most commonly used to treat gum disease by targeting and destroying P. gingivitis bacteria. Nearly 65 million Americans currently suffer from gum disease, an increasingly common inflammatory disease that is the leading cause of tooth loss. Gum disease develops when bacterial plaque forms on your teeth and begins to attack your teeth and gums, creating deepened pockets in the space between your gums, which allows for more bacteria to accumulate and additional damage to occur. Over time, this bacteria plaque will harden and turn into tartar. Once gum disease has progressed to this point, periodontal intervention will be necessary. If left untreated, gum disease can result in increasingly severe oral health issues, such as gum recession, loosened or missing teeth, and jawbone deterioration. Gum disease is also linked to other systemic health issues, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, which is why it is so important to treat gum disease as soon as possible.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by Board-Certified Periodontists who specialize in identifying and treating periodontal disease and issues related to the periodontium. We also provide comprehensive treatment options to ensure similar issues do not develop in the future. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with dental implant and oral surgery services, including oral surgery, Same Day Teeth®, and periodontal services. Benefits of Laser Gum Surgery & Treatment

While all patients are likely good candidates for laser gum surgery and treatment, this treatment method is especially effective for patients who have not had success with traditional treatment methods for periodontitis, for patients whose pockets are deeper than 4mm, of for patients who struggle with dental phobia or surgery anxiety.

In addition to being an effective treatment method for periodontal disease, additional benefits of the laser gum surgery and treatment procedure include:

  • Less invasive than traditional procedures
  • Does not require stiches, which in turn results in a faster healing time
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Accurately and precisely targets diseased areas
  • Does not require cutting gum tissue
  • Minimizes bleeding and discomfort during treatment
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Effective method for treating periodontal disease

Steps Involved in the Laser Gum Surgery and Treatment Process

Prior to performing laser gum surgery and treatment, we will conduct a thorough examination of your oral health to determine any underlying conditions that need to be addressed, and if necessary, take a 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, which will provide us with 3D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues, and teeth, which allows us to make informed treatment decisions.

During the laser gum surgery and treatment process, we will do everything we can to ensure that you experience minimal discomfort, which is why we offer varying levels of sedation, including oral sedatives, nitrous oxide, and intravenous (IV) sedation. Once you are sedated, the procedure will begin with the laser shooting a beam of light that is targeted directly at the diseased tissue around the tooth’s root. Once this tissue is removed, the root is smoothed to prevent additional bacteria from accumulating, after which the procedure will be complete.

Aftercare Following Laser Gum Surgery

Following laser gum surgery and treatment, post-procedural pain, swelling, and complications can be minimized or avoided if the following instructions are closely followed.

  • Avoid disturbing the surgical area
  • Post-procedural pain typically develops once the anesthetic wears off. Once you begin to feel discomfort or pain, take OTC or prescription medication as directed.
  • Place ice packs on the area where surgery occurred for twenty minutes at a time to control swelling.
  • You may experience tooth sensitivity to cold/hot temperatures, but this should go away as the healing process progresses.
  • Follow a soft food diet following the procedure, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing process progresses.
  • Avoid tobacco products and alcohol, as both can slow the healing process
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours minimum.
  • If possible, limit intense physical activity for the first three days, but most importantly following surgery.

In addition to following these aftercare instructions, we strongly encourage our clients to follow a six-month ongoing maintenance program, which includes regular professional cleanings of your teeth and allows us to monitor your overall oral health. By closely following aftercare instructions, scheduling regular maintenance, and continuing to follow good daily oral hygiene habits, you should enjoy a fast recovery that is free of complications, and continue to enjoy a bright, healthy smile.
