It all depends on the patient, the level of decomposition of the gums, and the underlying cause of the condition.

Exposed Tooth Roots

Exposed tooth roots are areas of the mouth wherein the gums have receded to the point that the root of the tooth can be seen. This can be extremely painful for the patient, extremely uncomfortable, and to some extent unsightly for others. It can cause the patient deeper health problems, and is most likely a sign that something serious is going on.

What is causing my Teeth to become exposed?

Your gums recede somewhat naturally over time. It is not uncommon as we age to have our teeth exposed a little more, as the gums are living tissues which are absorbing toxins and other products of our environment. However, when the root becomes so exposed that the patient is facing tooth loss or pain, it may be time to take action.

Symptoms of Exposed Tooth Roots

  • Pain- Patient may experience very sensitive or painful gums and teeth sensations as they are exposed to hot, cold, sweet, salty, or acidic foods.
  • Dark Area Under Tooth- Patient may notice that gums have receded to the point that they can see dark areas underneath the tooth itself.
  • Loose Teeth- Patient may be able to move tooth using their tongue, or may notice that area around tooth feels unusual–different than the tooth.
  • Bleeding- Patient may experience blood from the gums near the tooth root, especially after brushing or flossing.
  • Tooth Loss- The patient may experience tooth loss after the root exposure is significantly advanced or decayed.
  • Infection- Patient may notice signs or confirmation of infection due to bleeding, redness, inflammation, discharge, pain, or tooth loss. This is all caused by harmful bacteria operating within the gums and tooth destroying healthy tissue and exposing the structural support of the tooth.
  • Bad Breath- Persistent bad breath is usually a sign that something is decaying within the mouth. It is probably a symptom that there is infection within the gums.

How to Treat exposed roots

Tooth Replacement- Tooth replacement can reinvigorate the gums and help to resecure teeth within the jaw.

Hygiene Treatments- Help to rid the body of infection and provide a safe place to repair or replace teeth.

Gum Grafts- Attaching small grafts of healthy gums over areas where the gums where decayed or receded before. Over time the body attaches and integrates with these grafts.
