What Is Gum Contouring?
Gum contouring is a fast, safe, and effective procedure performed to create an even, aesthetically pleasing gumline for patients who have excessive gingival tissue or uneven gumline. While gum contouring is most frequently performed as a cosmetic procedure, it can also be done to help halt and correct periodontal disease or as part of a larger rehabilitation plan, which may involve procedures such as crowns, fillings, porcelain veneers, and/or bridges.
Gum Contouring Procedural Steps
To determine if gum contouring is right for you, we will first take a 3D CBCT scan. These 3D images will allow us to evaluate your teeth, bone, and the soft tissue and nerve pathways in order to determine any underlying conditions that need to be addressed and develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs.
On the day of your gum contouring procedure, we will administer a local anesthetic to ensure you do not experience any pain. Our clinic also offers oral sedatives, Nitrous Oxide, and IV sedation to ensure your comfort. Once you are comfortable, we will begin removing and reshaping the gum tissue with a scalpel, laser, or combination of the two. Once the desired amount of gingival tissue has been removed and there is a harmonious balance between your teeth and gums, we will clean the area and place bandages to ensure your gums are protected.
Recovery Following the Gum Contouring Procedure
You will likely not feel any discomfort during the gum contouring procedure due to the local anesthetic and dental sedation that is administered, however, you may begin to feel some mild pain once the effects of these have worn off. To help alleviate this discomfort and enjoy a fast recovery, follow these and any additional aftercare instructions provided to you by your periodontist:
- Rest: It is important to avoid highly physical activities such as high-impact sports for at least one week or longer. The more you rest and relax following your procedure, the faster your healing process will be.
- Pain medication/Antibiotics: Discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication or prescription medication. Patients who are at an increased risk of developing infections may also be prescribed antibiotic treatment. Take all medications as directed.
- Oral care: Use a s soft-bristle toothbrush while brushing your teeth and avoid brushing over the area of the gums that have been contoured.
- Do not use a straw, rinse, or spit for the first 24 hours following your procedure.
- Diet modification: To help avoid discomfort and irritating your gums, follow a soft food diet following your gum contouring procedure.
- Avoid alcohol and tobacco products: Use of either alcohol or tobacco products can inhibit the healing process and increase your risk of developing complications.
- Ice packs: Place ice packs over any swollen areas for fifteen-minute intervals to help reduce swelling.
