Sedation Dentistry Side Effects
The three most common types of sedation are oral sedation, nitrous oxide and intravenous (IV) sedation. All three methods are effective in reducing anxiety and eliminating procedural pain, however there are benefits and drawbacks to each, as well as unique side effects that may be experienced after they have been administered.
Side Effects of Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is taken in pill form approximately one hour before a procedure is scheduled and is most commonly given to patients with extreme dental phobia. Common side effects include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dry mouth
- Headache
- Lightheadedness or dizziness
- Mild amnesia
- Fogginess
- Dry mouth
These side effects are typically resolved within a few hours of treatment, but it is important to be aware that you may experience these side effects following your procedure. For this reason, it is important to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
Side Effects of Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide is administered as a gas and is commonly used for patients with dental phobia, high anxiety, extreme tooth sensitivity, low pain tolerance, or for patients who have difficulty sitting for extended periods of time. Though many patients will not have any adverse reactions, potential side effects of Nitrous Oxide include:
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Shivering
- Excessive sweating
- Sound distortion or hallucinations
The effects of Nitrous Oxide wear off very quickly, as should any side effects. If you experience any of the following, this may be an indication of an allergic reaction, in which case you should seek immediate medical care:
- Difficulty breathing
- Wheezing
- Hives
- Chills
- Fever
Side Effects of IV Sedation Dentistry
Our Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are certified to safely administer intravenous (IV) anesthesia; however, this level of sedation is avoided if possible as there are greater risks involved with using it. Possible side effects of IV sedation include:
- Drowsiness
- Bruising, swelling or bleeding at the injection site
- Dry mouth
- Lightheadedness or dizziness
- Mild amnesia/sleeping through the procedure
- Fogginess
Nausea or vomiting
Prior to performing any procedure that requires sedation, we will review your oral and medical history. Please let us know if there have been any changes to the medications you are taking or significant health events. While the risks of serious side effects are very low, it is important to be aware of these side effects ahead of time so you are not taken by surprise should any of them occur. It is also important to remember that while there is a small risk of side effects occurring, these risks are generally outweighed by the benefits of no procedural pain and reduced anxiety.
